Embodied Energy and SBS

The CN-SBS Research Project will conduct a comparison and analysis of the embodied energy in a typical steel building system and a comparable heavy timber framed building to determine how a steel building compares in terms of its embodied energy.

The project will also compare other aspects of the two buildings such as: ease of construction, material optimization, connections, ease of deconstruction, recyclability, etc.

The case study building will be located in Cambridge, Ontario and have these characteristics:

  • 60’ x 150’ clear span
  • 1-storey
  • Monoslope roof
  • R30 walls
  • 30-minute fire rating
  • Concrete slab-on-grade
  • 30% window-to-wall ratio
  • X-brace lateral load resisting system
